Sages of the New Covenant
The Chandogya Upanishad and the Mandukya Upanishad describes the three levels of consciousness:
Vaishvanara - Waking Consciousness
Taijasa - Dreaming Consciousness
Prajna - Deep-sleep consciousness
The waking consciousness is a way of life in which we identify with our physical body and live to satisfy only our physical desires and ambitions. Everything that we do is intended to satisfy the needs of the body and of the senses. Here the identity is with the body: I and my body. We could call this ‘Ego Consciousness’.
The Dreaming consciousness is a way of life which we have ideals to follow and ideal person to imitate. In general these ideals and ideal persons are taken from the Past. We could call this: ‘Guru Consciousness’. Praying through a Saint and joining a community of common ideals are forms of this ‘Guru Consciousness’.
The Deep-sleep consciousness is a way of life in which a person transcends ideals and ideal persons and enter into the direct contact with eternity It means that the past comes to an end. When the past comes to an end, the future also comes to an end. The present becomes a vehicle of eternity and the person realizes the likeness of God in her / him.
When Jesus was born in this world, he was in the waking consciousnesss. He needed nourishment and protection.
When Jesus was circumcised on the eight day of his birth, he became the follower of Judaism. He leant the Thanuk and attended synagogue and identified himself with a community. At this point of time, Jesus was in the Dreaming consciousness or Guru consciousness stage.
In the New Testament God spoke only twice: at the moment of Jesus’ baptism and at His transfiguration. On both occasions God said the same thing. ‘You are My beloved Son’ and ‘He is My beloved Son’. The baptismal experience of Jesus was a moment in which he came out of the womb of Judaism and entered into the universal presence of God. God said: “You are My beloved Son’. He became Immanuel. This was an exclusive stage attained by Jesus, which is the Deep-sleep consciousness.
There is also an another consciousness, which is the awakened consciousness or Super-consciousness of God. Human beings can pass through the ‘Waking Consciousness’ and ‘Dreaming Consciousness’ or the Alpha stage of Consciousness. Human beings can attain the ‘Deep-sleep Consciousness’ at one’s physical Death or Samathi. The only one who attained this level of consciousness during His life time is Jesus. Human beings, before attainting this ‘Deep-sleep Consciousness’ can attained the ‘Aawakened Consciousness’, where a person realizes the purpose of his / her existence in this world.
‘Aawakened Consciousness’ is state in which a person realizes his divine plan and submits him / her to accomplish the divine task through his / her existence in this world.
In the language of the ‘Kingdom of God’, it is allowing the Yeast (God) to leaven our meal (our existence). One could call this: “Divine-Plan Consciousness’ and Swami STHEVANANDA call this the ‘Immanuel-Konsciousness© ’.
Calling God ‘Abba Father’ and the assurance within for eternity are some forms of ‘Immanuel-Konsciousness© ’.
